Buenos Aires,
capitol of Argentina,
starting point for our tour of South America.

This eight lane freeway from the airport enters the city as Av. 9 De Julio (9th July avenue). We could hardly believe our eyes it is a very impressive introduction to Buenos Aires, with 16 lanes of through traffic plus a tree lined avenue each side.

The rest of the streets are easy to navigate, spaced so that intersections are 100 metres apart and well sign posted to show which way the street numbers run

Most towns have a mall, this one has two intersecting each other, shops open at 10 am and close at 8 pm, that is when the night life starts. Not many restaurants open before this time but we counted four of the kind that have the golden arches, in each of the two malls, along with the only Harrods store outside London.

Our afternoon tour took us to Boca square where Italian migrants working on the docks years ago built houses out of any material they could find. Some walls are corrugated iron others wood from packing cases, each painted a different bright colour. The city is full of parks and squares and surprises, one was an old tree in Palermo Park, a tree so old that it's branches have not only grown out over the footpath and cars parked on the street, but stretched halfway across the road as well. Concrete has been sprayed inside the tree to strengthen it. This park was in the Recoleta area, renown for the street cafes and where you will find the final resting place of Eva Peron.

The Cementerio De La Recoleta is like a small township with narrow paved streets lined with family mausoleums, looking, at first glance, like small houses, a most unusual place. There is only one complaint to be made about the city called "The Paris of the Americas". Taxis, all 3,500 of them, along with the frequent public transport buses, belch out the most putrid exhaust fumes, worse in streets leading to the malls.
